Brand Matters :-)

Well, there was an Operations Management class today, followed by Technology and Innovation class, but the real highlight of the day was the Marketing Management Class, which was the last class for the day. Dilney had brought along two big bottles - one of coke and other of a local private label called Freeway, if I remember this name correctly.

He made half the class go out and told the remaining of us to pour coke in two glasses and freeway in the third. After that, he took out tins of Mahou, the highest selling beer in Spain and another cheapest beer that he found on the shelf - again a private label - we poured Mahou in two glass and this cheap beer in the third.

Of course there were many such glasses, good enough to serve at least 15 people.

Then the people standing outside were called in and told to answer two questions:
1. Which of the two glasses have same beer or cola?
2. Which of the three glasses did they enjoy more?

Most people got it wrong when they were told to match the two glasses and almost all of them voted for the cheaper non-branded products instead of Coke and Mahou, as the ones they liked.

Lesson learned. Brand name matters. People tend to enjoy Coke more when they know they are drinking Coke. Hence, as part of Marketing, it is important to keep your brand name constantly flashing before them.

Anyways, as I sit in the first row, and had served as the bar tender, I had my own advantages. Even while the beer tasting was in progress, I managed to try all the 3 kinds [although I knew they are just two types ;-)
